Inside Building 2: GE Appliances' $490 million laundry manufacturing transformation takes shape

With new production coming to Louisville in 2027, take a look at the work underway inside Appliance Park

You heard about it. Now you're seeing it.

GE Appliances is putting its major American manufacturing investments into action, including a $490 million transformation of Building 2 at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

The project will bring production of next-generation front-load washers and GE Profile UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryers to the company's global headquarters beginning in 2027.

But bringing that production to Louisville takes a lot more than installing new equipment.

“New production, new equipment, new processes,” said Kelley Brooks, a member of GE Appliances' Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team who has spent 28 years with the company. “You heard about it, now you're seeing it. This is the execution of it.”

What It Takes to Transform a Manufacturing Plant

The work happening inside Building 2 is part of a larger effort to modernize Appliance Park and expand U.S. appliance production.

For Brooks and the teams involved, that means preparing the facility for an entirely new manufacturing operation—from designing the products and equipment to getting the building ready for installation.

“That triggers an enormous amount of work from the product design, the equipment design that will make the product, to getting the building ready to receive all of that equipment,” he said. “We've got suppliers that are going to make parts to bring it in.”

When completed, Building 2 will manufacture front-load washers and combo washer/dryers. The redesigned plant is planned to feature advanced robotics, automation and material-handling technologies, along with in-house production of key components such as stainless-steel washer baskets and cabinets.

The scale of the project reaches well beyond the walls of Appliance Park.

“There's a big impact to GE Appliances, but it's far-reaching into the community,” Brooks said.

Part of a $1 Billion Transformation at Appliance Park

The Building 2 project is one part of a broader $1 billion investment to transform laundry manufacturing across Buildings 1, 2 and 5 at Appliance Park.

The plans include bringing additional dryer production to Louisville, redesigning existing washer and dryer platforms and introducing new advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The work is part of GE Appliances' commitment to invest $3 billion in U.S. manufacturing over five years, bringing more appliance production to the United States.

As America's Most Invested Appliance Company, GE Appliances has committed $6.5 billion to its U.S. manufacturing operations since 2016 alone.

For Brooks, the most exciting part is seeing those commitments become reality.

“It's incredibly exciting to see us not only make the commitment, but to follow through with the commitment and really see it start to happen.”

What Built for America Means

When the new production lines begin operating in 2027, front-load washers and GE Profile UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryers will roll off the assembly lines in Louisville and make their way to customers across the country.

For Brooks, that connection between American manufacturing, jobs and the people who use GE Appliances products is what Built for America is all about.

“Built for America, for me, is very personal,” Kelley says. “It means we're building product that is sold in the U.S., and we're building it in the U.S.”

“We provide jobs that gives people the resources to buy the products that make people's lives better, and that's what Built for America means for me."
